Stuart Scott grew up in Springfield, Virginia and began writing at a young age. His first sales were to his older brothers in a neighborhood paper route. Scott attended James Madison University, where he wrote for the school newspaper and worked as an assistant sports editor. In the early 1980s, he worked full-time for both the Washington Star and The Washington Times
In 1987 he was hired by ESPN. In addition to his work at ESPN, Scott has written columns for Sports Illustrated and espnW. He was named one of Time magazine's 50 best sports writers in 2009 and 2010 and is an inductee into the Virginia Writers Hall of Fame.
